Drop Everything And Read (DEAR) – Forming a new habit and creating a lifestyle of reading at Birkirkara Primary

Drop Everything And Read (DEAR) – Forming a new habit and creating a lifestyle of reading at Birkirkara Primary

Research in psychology shows that it takes 21 days for a human being to form a new habit and 90 days to create a lifestyle, so starting from Monday 22nd February 2021, we, at Birkirkara Primary School, are going to spend 10 to 15 minutes of independent reading every day from Monday to Friday, Kinder 1 up to Y6, after the break, when we go back to class after playing in the yard.

Everyone is invited to bring a favourite book from home and keep it in their school bag to read during the DEAR time.

Pupils are encouraged to read in both English and Maltese. Pupils who can speak in another language are invited to bring a book in that language as well. Yes, we celebrate all languages in our school.

This is a technology-free time! We’re doing our utmost to limit screen time for our pupils as we are aware that they are spending more than enough time in front of a screen. We invite parents and guardians to continue this practice at home, as well.

Here’s a quote we would like to share with you all on this occasion:

The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who can’t read them.” – Mark Twain

European Week for Waste Reduction 2020

Our school is participating in this year’s European Week for Waste Reduction.

We are inviting pupils to discuss Eco-friendly measures as reflected in the school’s Eco Code.  All primary pupils will be invited to reflect on environmental issues and to convey that message by creating a digital poster.  Their posters will be uploaded on the school’s j2webby.

Posters can be created collaboratively in class or at home. This will involve the whole school community, including parents at home.

The Official Launch: Shaping The Future Together

Dear highly esteemed colleagues,

We, the staff of St Theresa College Birkirkara Primary School would like to invite you to our latest initiative:  Our school’s j2webby blog:  Shaping The Future Together.

All the work published on this blog is the result of a highly committed staff in collaboration with the cooperative parents of our pupils and the truly motivated pupils themselves.   The blog reflects our school’s commitment towards the 21st Century goals namely: Digital Literacy and communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, Environmental Literacy, Independent Learning, Flexibility and Adaptability skills.

We used the j2e.com/malta platform for our needs.  Members of staff together with pupils and parents, acquired these digital skills through online sessions with educators from the Digital Literacy and Transversal Skills Directorate.   We would like to thank Mr Grazio Grixti, Mr Keith Aquilina, Ms Tania Gatt, Mr James Callus, Ms Antonella Giles and Ms Lara Denise Grech for their constant support.

We are doing our utmost to reap all possible benefits out of this Covid-19 home-schooling situation and this is just one of the results.

The launch of this blog coincides with the school’s latest achievement of being awarded the Eko Skola Green Flag for the fifth consecutive time.   Most of the posts on our j2webby blog are related to our school’s #Eco Code and the daily challenges launched in the beginning of May.  All primary pupils are being invited to reflect on environmental issues and to convey that message by creating a digital poster.  We welcome you to read their messages and leave your comments below the posts.

So, without further ado, we kindly invite you to join our journey by clicking the link below:
